Artistic Depiction of Traditional Family Values

Many things that are taken for granted in life are given importance in art. One of these things is family. There are several art forms that deal with family values but one particular form shows it in a way that is relatable to everyone. Theater offers insight into our world and our human nature. One play that sets family values as its focus is Lorraine Hansberry’s, “A Raisin in the Sun”. Although the play is set in a specific period times with time specific problems, the real story lies in how the family deals with their issues together. The father wants a better life for his family but his desperation skews his judgment. We see a daughter who is just trying to find out who she is while the mother and grandmother struggle to hold everything together. All of the characters have their own inner strifes and problems. This is true of every person in every family today. However, at the end of the story they set aside their personal predicaments for the betterment of the family. Their selfishness has been transformed into a value that was not necessarily missing, but buried. It is the most important value of all-love.
