Think About It: Should These Pieces Considered Art?

How many times have you been to an art museum, seen a play or watched an interpretive dance and thought, They call this art? Many galleries are filled with objects that some people may not consider art. That’s because we all have different tastes, likes and dislikes. All art won’t be appreciated by everyone, but keeping an open mind is important.

Many famous artists from the past were not popular during their own time. Breaking from the norm and experimenting with new and different techniques often caused condemnation and disapproval from critics and contemporaries. This was often a source of frustrations for artists. What was once considered avant-garde centuries ago is now perfectly acceptable and often duplicated today.

When viewing a piece of artwork, a dance or a theatrical performance it’s important to consider the artist’s intentions. Try to understand the mood or feeling the artist was attempting to convey. The artist took the time and effort to produce the art so that others may enjoy and perhaps take something away from the experience.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to art. Art has no boundaries, restrictions or rules. Knowing this allows us all to be artists.
